Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon

In December 1968, the Apollo 8 crew became the first humans to enter lunar orbit and to see with their own eyes the dark side of the Moon, which can never be seen from Earth. On this historic journey, the Speedmaster was on the astronauts’ wrists. The Dark Side of the Moon “Apollo 8” was designed like a narrative that inscribes this moment into every layer of the watch. The front reflects the near side of the Moon, while the caseback reflects the far side that only that mission witnessed.

Measuring 44.25 mm in diameter and just 12.97 mm in thickness, the case is crafted from black ceramic. The tachymeter scale on the bezel is laser-engraved and filled with white enamel. Beneath a sapphire crystal glareproofed on both sides lies a skeletonised dial in black anodised aluminium. Through its openings, the movement’s blackened main plate and bridges, laser-ablated with a lunar surface texture, become visible. The near side of the Moon thus comes into view behind the dial. A yellow-varnished chronograph seconds hand and a grade 5 titanium small-seconds hand designed in the shape of the Saturn V rocket bring the spirit of the Apollo programme to this dark landscape.

At the heart of the watch runs Omega’s manual-winding chronograph calibre 3869. Featuring a Co-Axial escapement, the movement is certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology. It offers a 50-hour power reserve and magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss. The transparent caseback depicts the far side of the Moon along with the engravings “APOLLO 8, DEC 1968”, “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON” and the mission’s unforgettable words, “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE”. The perforated black rubber strap with yellow rubber lining and the black ceramic foldover clasp complete this collector’s piece with light and comfortable wear.
